Metal Structures - A History

Iron supports were first employed in a textile mill in England just before the 19th century and ever since then the technology, economy, and growth of metal structures have continued to expand.

Largely owing to its noninflammable make-up, high-grade metal has come forth as an as a logical source for a building material. Construction utilizing steel beams and framing was used in the latter part of the nineteenth century on the land of the continental U.S. and has continued to develop. Also, at this time, the ushering in of the earliest pre-fabricated structures of metal came about.

With the beginnings of the twentieth century building with steel or metal was largely restricted to use as garages as the use of automobiles was just gathering inertia to impact the U.S. In order to improve on the noncombustible characteristics of the garage and decrease the costs, 100% metal construction of this latest auto storage building soon became the choice over the first styles constructed of a mix of wood and metal. These were first generated by the Butler Manufacturing group.

Fabrication using pre-engineering, as applied to steel framing, was introduced in the first of the twentieth century by the Austin Company of Ohio. This was soon succeeded by the growth of Star Building in the nineteen twenties with their ability to provide cheap metal driller buildings to petroleum firms operating in Oklahoma.

A total metal construction was selected for hangars during World War II and produced a large boon for steel building system set up. Around this time, in addition, very distinct buildings called Quonset huts came into popularity. The Quonset hut was singled out for being economical but was also unappealing in appearance. These buildings needed only the service of a small number of workers and hand tools to build and due to this thousands of these specific very recognizable structures were made. These very distinguishable arched rooftop huts were well-known with the services for use as personnel quarters and shops along with the public as agricultural structures.

Manufacture of pre-fabricated building systems after WWII emphasized the quick erection advantages and inexpensive purchase prices in lieu of any aesthetics to market the product. The purchasers of these structures placed more importance on what would be housed and protected inside the building instead of what the outside appearance would be. Although its look was very ordinary, this generation in regards to metal structure engineering included a standard roof pitch of four on twelve. The doubtful sturdiness and quality of these first pre-fabricated steel structures placed reluctance in building purchasers’ minds as these unappealing structures were left to deteriorate in our nation for many years.

Fortunately, improvements in all-steel buildings gave rise to a fresh way of building that would become very prevalent.
